# Ceiling Fan Size Recommendation Calculator

The golden rule is- buy small ceiling fans for asmall room and large ceiling fans for alarge room. It may sound awkward, but the size of the ceiling fan ensures style, sophistication, maximum performance and most importantly- comfort. A right size ceiling fan besides keeping you cool also saves your money. So, before buying a ceiling fan you need to know, how to choose a ceiling fanwhich is most suitable for your room. When you establish a properly sized ceiling fan to your room you not only secure the fan’s performance and longevity but also safety and comfort for the occupants of the room. If a small fan is installed in a large room, then the motor will wear off quickly as a small fan has to work much harder, to cool you off. A large flow in a small room will create a large amount of airflow which will be uncomfortable for the occupants. Choosing a proper size is recommended if you want to avoid replacing your ceiling fan every month and don’t want to fill like living in a constant tornado.

Step-I: Determine blade span based on room square feet

• Blade span is the diameter created by fan blades while rotating.
• With an odd number of fan blades, measure the distance from the center to the tip of the fan. Multiply the number by 2.
• With an even number of fan blades measure the distance between the tips of 2 opposing blades.

• To determine your room size, multiply the length of the room in feet to the breadth of the room in feet. The result is your room square feet.

Standard measurement unit for blade span to room size ratio:

• CFM or cubic feet per minute is the unit of the air removed per minute by the fan. This unit provides a more scientific or accurate measure of the amount of air a fan can cool.
• This figure must be compared with the rooms overall area, to choose the best size of ceiling fan for a particular space.

General ceiling fan size chart:

For a room with anarea lower than 75 square feet, the blade span must be 29-36 inches and for a 76-144 sq. ft. room, thesize of blade span must be 36-44 inches. Installation of two fans of the mentioned size is recommended if the room size is more than 400 sq. ft.

Step-II: Determine ceiling fan down-rod size on the room height

Any ceiling fan which is over 9 feet needs a down-rod. It is the metal pipe that connects the motor to the mounting connecting the hardware. It maintains a stable airflow by keeping a safe and scientific distance with aroof (8-10 ft.) and with thefloor (minimum 7 ft.). A down-rod varies in length from 3-6 inches depending on the manufacturer. A ceiling fan hanging too low or too high will cause poor airflow in the room ultimately damaging the fan motor since it will work hard to cool the room. The standard way to calculate the proper down-rod size is to subtract the height of the ceiling fan from the total height of the room. For example, let the ceiling is at a height of 10 ft. and the height of the ceiling fan is 12 inches then a 1 feet long down rod is needed to hang the ceiling fan at the height of 8 ft. from the floor.

These are some standard ways to measure the best size for installation of a ceiling fan. Nowadays companies like Havells, Atomberg, Crompton Greaves etc. take care of these size issues of the fans. You may also consider experts, as their measurement will give you a more accurate size both for the blade span and the down rod.Check how you can get these fans to decorate your house.
